Separation of Church and Steak
...Sipping on milk instead of salivating for meat
I feel like every church event these days is centered around some type of food, or at least coffee. Eating eating always eating. Not just literally but spiritually as well, we love being discipled but cringe at the thought that we might have to pour some of that God-knowing goodness back out.
It seems the more we buy into the me mentality that has become so status quo, we forget about community and about putting the community over each other. Forgive me for sounding like a hippie but it's true.
We eat out instead of pour in and call it fellowship. Might I suggest a little intention in our time together, building relationships is great and necessary but watching two movies in a row and have snacks is not discipleship. Our
DVD-discipleship, or maybe PrayStation 3 (a cell group of 3 males who "fellowship" over video games) just don't seem to be cutting it.
What do you think?

I've actually been feeling a similar way about higher education. BC is supposed to be a catholic university with "men and women for others" as its motto, but so much time is wasted on empty pursuits that could be spent on actually being a person for others. People here have such an air of entitlement, with their name brand clothes, expensive purses, and what not. They talk all empathetically about suffering in the world but then go spend $200 on a tiny Coach change purse. how many meals could that purse have bought for a food bank or a homeless shelter?
I realize in retrospect that this has next to nothing to do with your post... I guess I just needed to vent my outrage!
I really like this post. That's kinda all I have to say. :-]
balance...it is so easy to get off balance and lose sight of who we serve because we are so busy serving we don't have time to sit and be in His presence. it is easy to listen to the meat of the preacher and amen the Word, only to then turn around, wow wasn't that great, and somehow the motivation to take action becomes discussion and inaction....When I seek him early, then will I walk this day in His will....ps...good to see you writing again, and I found the red sox hat.
