Recently I heard a speech Adult ADHD and became convinced I was showing strong symptomes and had been for some time. Then I began looking at the statistics, "20-25 percent of children are diagnosed with some form of ADD". This doesn't sound like a disease it sounds like a personality type.
Remeber when it was uncooth to be left handed and children were forced to conform to a right-handed world. I still catch and pitch with the same hand because finding a left handed glove was neerly impossible until much later in life. It seems the "right brained" children are being forced to conform to a "left brained" society that doesn't know how to deal with them.
These are broad brush stroke statments and should be takenn as such. I am sure there are some actual chemical imbalances in those diagnosed with ADD. But how many are diagnosed with a disease that is not much more than a personality.
Hopefully we will develop a way to educate these individuals that doesn't include drugs. A way that encourages them to thrive in who they are while still attaining the necessary education requirments. As someone who has a very difficult time concentrating, even on things I love like music and writing, I appreciate the efforts science has made to help people like me. I just would like to see the education system develop programs that utalize the positive effects of ADD type diseases.
